After a long, exhausting, painful war for independence from Great Britain, the United States became its own nation, a nation of choice and rights, a nation of voice and strong opinion, a nation with freedom handed to humans by God. The birth of this glorious new state brought forth a new era of revolution throughout the world. Countries took America’s victory to heart, overthrowing their monarchial governments and establishing governments run by popular sovereignty. The existence of the United States, perhaps, led to the global fight for self-government. However, though all our grandeur, this great nation was naà ¯ve at birth. Any weapon in the wrong hands can result in devastation. They can be used in robberies, homicides, suicides, and in the ever-growing threat of terrorism. At the same time, weapons can protect from crime. Police are equipped with guns. The military uses rifles and explosives to â€Å"secure the blessings of liberty.† And yes, weapons can be used to defend one’s self in their own home. The castle doctrine, more commonly known as the â€Å"Make My Day† law, states that if someone is attacked on their property, they may use deadly force to defend themselves. There was a road rage case in Florida where castle doctrine was used. A couple was driving and got into a minor car accident. Stick Shift vs Automatic Free Essays

Automatic vs. stick shiftbuying a new car might be a great experience. The question is which one is better, automatic or stick shift? It all depends in what you would prefer and what do you expect from the car. We will write a custom essay sample on Stick Shift vs Automatic or any similar topic only for you Order Now Saving gas, safety and fun are three important reasons to think before making a decision. It’s important that you know your needs are when deciding what type of transmission to get. Do you want a compact car or a larger vehicle? Do you have experience with a stick shift transmission? Will you be driving long distance, road trips, or driving in the city? Do you want to do your own repairs? Why are automatic cars so popular? Since most people drive in the city or in stop and go traffic, automatic cars are more convenient. Even though automatic cars are more expensive and tend to wear down faster. Cars with automatic transmission are a great way to drive around. They do not require much driving skills than stick shift cars. Automatic cars are made comfortable way of driving especially driving in heavy traffic. People who don’t like to drive usually choose an automatic transmission. Automatic transmission require a lot of attention to the engine and keeping up with all of the services such as oil changes, brakes, filters and transmission fluids. Automatic transmission are improving their standards and slowly catching up with to become more fuel efficient. However in some cases vehicles can still be as much as 10% increase in fuel use for an automatic transmission! Overdrive gears can help this problem also. Automatic shifts are not as fun as a stick shift because there not as challenging. On the other hand stick shift transmission saves you hundreds of dollars. Stick shifts are easier to repair and you may be able to do small repairs on your own. Stick shift transmissions have better gas mileage, they also have smaller engines, but they have a lot of power. For example racecar drivers prefer stick shift transmission because it allows them to take control and also the stick shift has more power. Race car drivers use stick shift to take driving to a higher standard. Even though stick shift saves you more money and gives you better gas mileage, if you stayed in the city like New York having a stick shift wouldn’t be your choice. Stick shifts are good for driving over a long stretches are good for road trips, driving in the city with a stick shift causes wear and tear on your clutch. Which sometimes can very expensive to fix, most people say that is just too much work to keep switching gears when you are in stop and go raffic, if you have experience driving a stick shift your transmission can last a lot longer than an automatic transmission. If you are looking for a larger vehicle or an SUV it would be hard to find stick shift switching gears to reduce speed also can save you on break repairs, stick shift transmission require you to be more active with your car and it allows you to pay attention when there is something wrong with your car because you’re not in con trol, so it’s hard for you to pay attention when there is something wrong with your car. How you feel in the car as well as you can handle the car. For a passive driver who is interested in learning how to coordinate the clutch then stick shift has a better handling for you. Stick shift has a lot of different gears and speed which require a stronger set of hands to control the wheel while driving. The automatic has normal handling on the wheel even when going at a faster speed an automatic can drive itself without the need to shift from one gear to another no matter how fast you go. The stick shift transmission requires you to learn to shift between one to five different gears. The transmissions are built differently when comparing an automatic to a stick shift transmission. With a stick shift you have to switch gears while you’re driving. The difference between an automatic or stick shift transmission, both come with different prices. When you are putting on an automatic transmission can range from a few hundred dollars cheaper than a stick shift transmission. Stick shift transmission is preferred for traditional racing. Where quick gear changes are required to exit turns quickly. Automatic transmission could not keep up with a skilled driver using a stick shift automatic transmission are preferred amongst the common drivers because of its ease of use a manual transmission requires coordination between the clutch throttle, and shifting of gears to provide a smooth ride and not damage the transmission. This decision is yours it’s your personal preference on what kind of transmission you would want to drive daily. I prefer driving an automatic car because it is much easier and comfortable for me. I live in a small town and I drive long distance to work and automatic always have been my favorite. I never wanted to learn how to drive a stick shift car even though it saves more on gas. I like to be able to relax when I drive. A stick shift requires too much, you have to switch gears constantly and it’s difficult in lots of traffic. Automatic vs. stick shift it’s your decision cars are made for driving. The choice is yours. How to cite Stick Shift vs Automatic, Papers

Spring Awakening at the University of Illinois at Urbana †Champaign Essay Example For Students

Spring Awakening at the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign Essay Question One In your opinion, why did the theatre department at UIUC choose to produce the rock musical, Spring Awakening? Response I think the Theatre Department chose to produce Spring Awakening for several reasons. First of all, it is a very creative and influential work in the history of musical theatre and theatre, which also won tons of significant awards in the realm of theatre (like Tony Award) and music (like Grammy Award). In my opinion, the Theatre Department produce Spring Awakening to emphasize its artistic value and influence, and to show respect to this great piece of art at the same time. Secondly, I think Theatre Department produces Spring Awakening to present the audience (mostly students at UIUC) the charm of musicals, which is considered to be the most popular type of theatre in Broadway and even across the nation. Since many of us may not have a chance to go to Broadway, producing Spring Awakening here offers us a chance to appreciate a great musical more conveniently. Last but not least, the conceptual meaning of this play is still worthwhile for adolescents and their parents today to learn about. Although the historical background for this play is late 19th century in Germany, many of the conceptions that the playwright wanted to convey, for example, sexuality, violence, domestic abuse, abortion, homosexuality and suicide are still essential issues for adolescents and young adults today. A majority of the obstacles, ambiguities and pursuits of the characters in the performance are still major problems of many youngsters nowadays, which lack of good solutions. As for a specific example, when Moritz was told that he failed the final exam, his after reacted him with disdain, blame and contempt rather can care and inspiration, which is part of the reason of Moritzs suicide. Today, there are still many adolescents who commit a suicide because they are not able to cope with the stress from failure at school and blames from their parents/teachers. I went to see the performance on Moms weekend and I noticed that there was many parents watching attended this production. Producing Spring Awakening offers a chance for parents to know more about their children, and for adolescents/youngsters in the university to know more about themselves and how to deal with major problems in their lives. Question Two What do you feel this production of Spring Awakening communicated to the audience? Support your conclusions with specific examples. Response First of all, it showed the audience the power and charm of musicals. The live singing performance and live orchestra have produced amazing effects. By letting the characters sing out their internal thoughts, all the audience get to understand the nature of the characters better. The audience can feel the characters conflicts, pains, desires, desperations and confusions more deeply. This production has presented the audience about how overwhelming and impressive a musical can be. Last but not least, it communicated to the audience with the need for concentrations on, but not limited to the problems of sex educations among adolescents. In this production, the school emphasized a lot on Latin proficiency but not sex educations, although the latter one is the real concerns of the students and much more important for the adolescents, which partly resulted in the death of Wendla. It is worthwhile because we still have the same problems today. Many adolescents are told by their parents not to attempt to have sex with their romantic partners, but what they are untold is why? and how?. However marking sex as a taboo cant stop adolescents curiosity. .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 , .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .postImageUrl , .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 , .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2:hover , .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2:visited , .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2:active { border:0!important; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2:active , .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2 .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua682086e79bee52d6b1780cf10100bf2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Giants of the Arts Research Paper EssayMany of them try without knowing how ?, which can lead to serious problems like teenage pregnancy. If we can provide adequate sex educations at home and at schools for teenagers, they will be better at coping their confusions and less likely to engage in dangerous behaviors. Moreover, when I say not limited to ?, I mean that simply concluding this production as a call for sex education ? is not adequate. In fact, the production should be expected to be much higher in richness and complexity. Besides the need for sex education, it also conveyed other controversial and sensitive problems like homosexuality, suicide, violence and so on, and it went much further than simply presenting these problems. It showed how adolescents think about these problems deep in their heart (by singing), and contrasted/compared the internal thoughts with external behaviors (like the girls teasing each other about marrying the boys in town, and how they present in front of their parents). It reprimanded the school and parents for the lack of adequate care/instructions, ignorance and stupid behaviors, like Wendlas mother sent Wendla to abortion surgery, which resulted in Wendlas death. It also presented the adolescents (attempted) rebellions, bravery explorations, and free spirit, though some explorations, like unprotected sex and suicide, are wrong. In short, it conveyed further more than sex education. It reveals the nature of multiple issues and somewhat complimented some explorations of the adolescents, which stands for the desire for free spirit. Question Three What appealed to you about the production and why? Response I like the production mostly because it is a musical. I never attended a music performance and I never knew how much I might love a musical until I attended this production. The songs in the production are mainly for presenting internal psychological activities of the characters and I really like this form of presentation. I think by singing all the psychological activities out, the willingness, desires, pains, and confusions of all the characters are presented much more strongly and impressively than simply by using languages and body movements. When I heard all the internal thoughts of the characters from the lyrics, I felt great empathy and resonance with them since I also met the same problems and confusions as I grew up. Whats more, I personally think all the actors sung really great, and even much better than many popular singers nowadays. The whole production is also a wonderful live concert. All the songs have beautiful tones and thoughtful lyrics. I particularly like the main character Wendla and the song Mama Who Bore Me ? since her voice is so beautiful. Another factor that appealed to me is the bold and inviting nature of this production. I like this production because it has presented all the conflicts in such a direct, bold, and sensitive way. I like all the bold depictions of a series of adolescence problems †sex, abortion, homosexuality, suicide, and so on, of the accusing of parents and schools ignorance, and of the childrens brave rebellions and free spirit. I really respect the original author of this production, Frank Wedekind, for bringing about so many controversial problems in his time that are even still difficult to address nowadays. I respect Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik for making Wedekinds original work into such an influential musical in Broadway, nationally and bringing all the controversial issues to Broadway, to the nation and even to the world. All these creators have kept the bold and inviting nature of this production. They are trying to describe every problem as directly and deeply as they can and I think thats what the society really needs. Spring Awakening has offered a chance for all the people (especially adolescents and their parents) to see all the problems and the consequences of these problems in a very direct way. .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 , .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .postImageUrl , .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 , .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328:hover , .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328:visited , .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328:active { border:0!important; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328:active , .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328 .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub0061313f43d1da9d57d5ef404c0d328:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Of Mice ; Men EssayFor example, we may never know how regretful a suicide can be until we see the character Moritz did that on stage. All these bold and direct depictions, in my opinion, should have greater impacts on the audience and the society as a whole than other indirect ones, since these depictions somewhat push ? the society to face the problems and their consequences and natures (i. e. where do they come from and how teenagers think about these). And only when the society can face the existence of the problems and know the nature of these problems, we can start generating adequate solutions.

Acquaintance Rape essays

Acquaintance Rape essays Women take many routine precautions in their lives to prevent acts of violence from happening to them. Women take these precautions as a second nature because ever since we were little children our parents taught us not to do certain things and if you do your safety may be in jeopardy. However, the precautions theyre taking are against an attack by a stranger as opposed to an attack by an acquaintance. This should not be the case when we know that large proportions of these violent and sexually violent crimes are committed by someone the woman knows and sometimes even trusts. All women know not to go out alone or walk alone, especially at night. We also know better than to interact with men if we dont want to pursue it. We are taught to dress differently so as not to attract a man. We are taught to have a ride, and let someone know where youre going and what time you plan on arriving home. These routine precautions are a good idea, but they arent addressing the real problem. The real problem is acquaintance rape, even though most people when they visualize rape, they visualize a stranger in a dark alley waiting to pounce. This is obviously not the case. If we look at the risk factors associated with acquaintance rape then we can assess some routine precautions that can be taken to avoid acquaintance rape. The first is frequently drinking enough to get drunk. Obviously men will find you more vulnerable to give into their demands if you have been drinking or are drunk. A simple way to avoid this is not drinking in excess. This directly follows the next risk factor, which is drinking to the point of being unable to resist forceful sexual advances. This is an obvious risk factor. You are certainly more likely to be raped when you cant resist because to a man that means you want it. Using drugs or drinking by either the victim or the assailant increases the risk. Therefore, don...

Battles fought by Ancient Greeks and their neighbors Essay

Battles fought by Ancient Greeks and their neighbors - Essay Example The total weight of a hoplite's equipment and armor was 50-60 pounds. Generally, only the wealthy and upper-middle class served as hoplites due to the high costs of the equipment. At first, the spears were about seven feet long, and the formation was about six to seven ranks deep. In combat the phalanx would move towards the enemy in unison, forming a thick wall of spears. When two phalanxes fought, one would attempt to either break the formation of the other or occasionally push the soldiers in the opposing phalanx over. Eventually some more advanced tactics were developed, such as sudden attacks on a certain point in a phalanx. The phalanx was a strong formation that had high shock power and could defend against charging heavy cavalry. However, the formation was also slow, and it needed to be set up before battle. Light infantry was also used often by Greek city-states. Types of light infantry included peltasts, or javelin throwers; archers; and slingers. Peltasts were the most common type of light infantry. They fought with swords and javelins, and they wore only light armor and shields. Archers carried a bow and arrow, and slingers carried a sling that could be used to hurl small stones or lead slugs at an enemy. The equipment carried by the light infantry was cheaper than that carried by the hoplites, and many poorer citizens fought as light infantry. While light infantry could not withstand a charge of heavy infantry if it was trapped, it was more mobile, and could wear down the enemy from afar. Cavalry was also occasionally used by the Ancient Greeks. Originally light cavalry that threw javelins was used, but the Macedonians developed a type of heavy cavalry known as The Companion Cavalry. These cavalrymen carried nine to twelve foot lances and wore heavy armor. Light cavalry was used fo r reconnaissance and harassment, and the companions were used to make a decisive charge that would overrun an enemy force and win the battle. Ancient Greek naval forces used a type of warship called the trireme. This ship was propelled by three rows of oars. The rowers were slaves in many states, and poor citizens in Athens. Triremes carried marines for boarding an enemy ship, archers, a battering ram and some small ballistae and catapults. One common tactic that was used was ramming, which is where a ship would speed up and try to collide with another ship with its battering ram so that a hole would be broken in the other ship. The other major tactics were boarding and a tactic where a ship would brush against another to try to break the oars in the other ship. The first major battles that the Greeks fought against opponents from outside Greece were in the Persian Wars. These wars lasted from 499 BC to 448 BC. The Persians used different tactics than the Greeks. Persian forces were mostly made up of light infantry that used bows, spears, and swords. Persian infantry had only light armor and wicker shields. Persian tactics involved the use of large amounts of archery. Usually, only the front ranks of the Persian infantry would engage in melee combat, while the other ranks showered the enemy with arrows. The Immortals were an elite unit that consisted of only the best warriors. Only Medians, Elamites, or Persians could serve in this unit. The Immortals always kept their strength at 10,000 men, and they served as the
